Note: The conftool and all references are being removed from the project, however, old releases still contain source and are thusly bound to the license described below
All of
HeartOfGold (minus these documents) are released and developed underneath the
GPL Version 2∞. The documentation and associated Wiki is owned by Epiphanic Networks and is released under the
Creative Commons Version 2 License∞.
ConfTool is a left over from another project (IRCD Phoenix) and is licensed under the
New BSD License∞. Please make sure you read all the licenses and understand their content before you attempt
downloading our software.
All code is Copyright 2005 Greg Feigenson and Ryan T Higgins (where expressely noted). William Dillon has elected to hold on to his code out of feelings of distrust towards Ryan (and rightfully so... he took over the SF project). A lot of the code was designed by me, and further revised by myself following the failure of several points but is not labelled with my name.
New BSD License
The New BSD license is akin to the
MIT License∞ and is extremely loose in terms of what it prohibits. It states, more or less:
- All original code was written by me
- There is no warranty of any sort
- There are no restrictions regarding commercial or non-commercial activity
- The author does not endorse any use of the software, and no claims shall be made as such
- You must include the New BSD license with any redistributions/modifications to label the original code
- You can fork the project or use it as you see fit with no requirements in terms of permission
The conf tool included in HOG is a leftover from another project, which is licensed under the New BSD License
You may find the full text of the New BSD license
at OpenSource.org∞
GPL License
The GNU Public License (GPL) is designed to further Open Source development as envisioned by Richard Stallman (RMS). The terms of the GPL state the following in synopsis:
- There is no warranty of any sort attached to the software, nor is there a guarantee that it will work or do much of anything
- The software is Free, in the nature of both "free beer" and "liberty." The original author may sell the code, but must provide the source with it. Any subsequent user may not sell this code or use it as a portion of commercial software, and further must provide the source code and any modifications thereof.
- You may not remove the names of the authors nor the original copyright notice
- You may not make any claim on behalf of the author regarding the software or otherwise, especially if you are trying to sell anything
The GPL can be a rather complex license and has quite a few restrictions. PLEASE make time to read
the online license∞ or mail

Creative Commons License
All Epiphanic Networks documentation as listed upon this Wiki is released under the Creative Commons 2.0 License
link∞. The Creative Commons license provides the protection I require while at the same time being rather simple and easy to understand.
The qualities of the Creative Commons follow:
- You must attribute content to the original author
- All content is noncommercial (following a caveat listed below)
- Any derivitive work must be licensed in a similar manner
- The Creative Commons license does not hinder fair use
- The author(s) may waive any of the conditions above - that means that I can use my documents for commercial purposes as I see fit.
Since this is documentation on an open source project, selling them would be rather rediculous. I licensed them under the CC2 license because it's simple, powerful and does what I want.
